Mammaplasty (breast surgery)

Mammaplasty is often necessary for correction of breast defects that may be a result of congenital anomaly, trauma or previous surgical intervention. Also mammaplasty is used to enhance breast shape and size.

Types of mammaplasty

Breast augmentation: This type of mammaplasty is performed to increase breast size. Typically this is achieved by the means of implants or autologous fat transplantation (also known as lipofilling). This procedure also makes sense when significant breast assymetry is observed.

Breasr correction: This type of mammaplasty is performed to correct congenital breast defects or to correct placement of previously placed implant.

Reduction mammaplasty: This type of mammaplasty is applied to reduce breast size.

Breast lift (mastoplexy): This type of mammaplasty allows to correct breast sagging (ptosis) due to pregnancy, breast feeding or aging. Excess skin and fat are removed and breast shape is restored.

Nipple and areola correction: This type of mammaplasty includes nipple and areola reshaping, which is typically required in case of congenital or acquired defects.

Breast reconstruction: This type of mammaplasty is performed after mastectomy or lumpectomy, or in case of severe breast trauma. Breast implants or autologous fat transplantation are used for this procedure.

Mammoplasty indications and contraindications

Mammaplasty, as well as other cosmetic surgery procedures, is an important part of contemporary medicine. This procedure is recommended in following cases:

• significant breast asymmetry;
• congenital, post-trauma or post-surgery defects;
• unsatisfactory breast size;
• breast ptosis (sagging);
• stretched areolas or nipples;
• shape/texture degradation due to pregnancy or aging.

Mammaplasty is not recommended if following conditions take place: 

• serious cardiovascular pathology;
• pregnancy and breast-feeding;
• renal deficiency;
• breast inflammation or mastitis;
• blood coagulation problems;
• mental disorders;
• varicosis.
