Calf implant issues that call for implant removal: 

1. Infection: any implantation surgery inevitably carries infection risk. If that is the case, an antibiotic course is the first course of action, though it does not have 100% success rate, as implants offer pathogens protected niches, so the infection often persists. Thus, the implant must be removed, and after the infection is cured another implantation surgery may take place.
2. Pinched nerve: calf is a highly functional part of human locomotive system, and is well-innervated. Introduction of a foreign body, like an implant, may apply excess pressure to sensory or transmitter nerves, causing pain, insensitivity or partial loss of function. This is a relatively rare condition, but if it takes place – the implant must be immediately removed to prevent lasting damage to calf nerves.

Muscle contractions, mechanical impact of walking, running and jumping – all these factors contribute to eventual dislocation of implants, and oftentimes it is not symmetric. Thus, calf implants are either removed or their placement is corrected.
