A brief surgical intervention is capable of addressing a range of common aesthetic concerns in the eyelid area: adjust the upper eyelid, remove lower eyelidpuffiness, andgenerally make the gaze appear more open and youthful. If desired by the patient, blepharoplasty can also alter the shape of the eyelid, elongating or lifting its corners.
During a preliminary consultation, the patient and the doctor discuss the nature of the upcoming surgical procedure, clarify individual features and requirements, and come to a mutual understanding regarding the future outcome. Within a single operation, it is possible to perform either a separate correction of only the upper or lower eyelid, or a comprehensive cosmetic surgery, rejuvenating skin around the eye and correcting an “aged” eyelid.
Blepharoplasty typically takes from one to three hours, depending on the complexity and extent of the changes made, and is usually performed under general anesthesia. In certain cases, local anesthesia combined with sedative medications is also permissible.
The exact course of procedure depends on the type of intervention and is determined during preliminary consultation. Typically it involves making incisions at the target site, removal of excess fat and skin, and placement of internal self-resorbing sutures for shape correction.
In the first three days following the operation, increased tearing or, conversely, dry eye syndrome may be observed. This is a normal reaction the surgical intervention in near proximity to the eye. During this period, failure to adhere to the doctor’s recommendations may lead to conjunctivitis, characterized by redness of the eyes and sometimes dryness or a sensation of a foreign body. In certaincases, eye drops with anti-inflammatory agents are prescribed. Typically, patients are not hospitalized after surgery, though visiting the doctor for wound dressing and evaluation is required for several days after surgery.
An incision is made within the fold of the upper eyelid skin. The surgeon removes skin that sags and excess fat, and then cosmetic stitches are placed so the possible scar is hidden within the natural folds of skin.
Changes can be clearly seen within 2 weeks after surgery, as postoperative swelling recedes. Final results can be observed within four months after surgery, as the healing completes and the tissues stabilize.
Typically patients return to normal lifestyle within 1-2 weeks after surgery.
Swelling cannot be completely avoided and typically lasts for 1-2 weeks post-surgery. Though it can be reduced by sleeping in half-seated position, avoiding ultraviolet, alcohol consumption and smoking. It is strictly forbidden to visit swimming pools or sauna. Detailed postoperative care instructions are given by the doctor during consultation.
