Breast Augmentation - how to choose the implant?

Збільшення грудей: вибір імплантів та методів для досягнення бажаного обʼєму

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure which is performed in order to increase breast volume or alter their shape, typically involving placement of implants. Such interventions are not therapeutic, as they are primarily performed for aesthetic purposes. Augmentation mammaplasty in Alpha Cell Clinic is a safe and reliable to change your appearance, as we offer top-tier medical services, lead our patients through the entire course of treatment (including postoperative care) and work exclusively with certified materials. Before the surgery, a consultation with the cosmetic surgeon is necessary, as thorough examination takes place and medical laboratory testing is prescribed, to guarantee the safety and effeciency of intervention.

How to choose implants to achieve the desired result

Typically, patients seek breast augmentation in order to deal with unsatisfactory breast volume, or to fix defects caused by congenital reasons, trauma, previous surgical intervention or age-related changes. There is a vast range of various implants and placement approaches, designed to suit individual needs.

Breast implants can be classified by different features, material is one of them:

  • Saline Implants. This type of breast implants is, in essence, a sac with sterile physiological solution of salt. It has liquid, bouncy texture, though is eventually losing its popularity, due to the risks of rupture.
  • Silicone Implants. These implants are filled with silicone gel of varying consistency, come in different shapes, textures and, naturally, volumes. These implants don’t collapse even if ruptured, and are known to be resilient and lasting.

By shape implants are generally divided into two categories:

  • Round implants have a semi-spherical shape and are used to restore lost breast volume and shape. Doctors typically recommend this type of implants to correct the defects of sagging  breasts (breast ptosis) and to address asymmetry. Their main advantage is that they create a permanent push-up effect and, in the case of sagging correction, do not acquire an unnatural appearance, thanks to their high placement point.
  • Teardrop-shaped implants, also known as anatomical implants, as they are design to mimic the natural breast shape. These implants are most pronounced in their lower part, and require more careful placement technique if compared to round implants. Typically these implants are used to correct minor sagging of the mammary glands without drastically changing the volume. Due to asymmetrical shape, in case of displacement or rotation of the implant the defects are clearly visible and may call for secondary intervantion, to correct placement. For these reasons, such implants are not recommended for athletes and individuals with a very active lifestyle, in case of systematic high load on the upper part of the torso or upper shoulder area, as this increases risk of implant dislocation.

Additionally, brest implants come in varying surface texture. In certain cases, the exact placement technique calls for implants with modified surface in order to facilitate their integration into the adjacent tissues:

  • Smooth implants have a greater degree of movement freedom within the implant pocket, granting a more natural-like feeling. These are the most common implants used in industry.
  • Rough implants have a textured surface, which facilitates adhering of the implant to the placement pocket. This option limits risk of implant displacement and diminishes chances of dense scar capsule devepment. Typically, this option is picked if the patient is found to be inclined towards excessive scar tissue formation.

Implant size is determined by volume, with an average size step being around 150-200 milliliters. When choosing the size, individual body parameters should be taken into account, including weight, height, chest width, as well as the volume and condition of the mammary glands.

Preparing for breast augmentation surgery

Before undergoing the procedure, it is essential to go through a round or several of consulting with a cosmetic surgeon. Clear communication and establishing trust is essential at this stage. The surgeon will guide you through the procedure plan, help you select the right implants and technique to achieve desired result, and conduct thorough examination, to ensure safety and efficiency of intervention.
